About Chugach Census Area

Chugach Census Area was created on January 2, 2019, when the former Valdez-Cordova Census Area was split into two separate census areas. The other half became the Copper River Census Area. Chugach includes the communities of Cordova, Valdez, and Whittier, along with a number of smaller communities and unincorporated areas spread across a large geographic region. There is no borough seat because the area is part of the Unorganized Borough. Local governance is handled at the community level through city governments and tribal entities.

Because Chugach Census Area is relatively new, some older divorce records may still be indexed under the former Valdez-Cordova designation. If you are searching for historical cases from before 2019, use the same CourtView system and Valdez court contacts. The case files have not moved; the court simply serves the redrawn census area boundaries. Residents closer to Palmer or Anchorage may have filed their cases in those courts instead, especially if they lived near the Mat-Su region. Always confirm the case location through CourtView before assuming which courthouse holds the records.

Divorce and Dissolution in Chugach Census Area

Alaska offers two ways to end a marriage. A dissolution of marriage is uncontested. Both people agree on all terms before filing. It costs less and moves faster. A divorce is the contested path, where one party files and the other responds. If they cannot agree, a judge decides. Both end with a final court order called the divorce decree.

For an uncontested dissolution without children, use form DR-100. With children, use form DR-105. These are available through the Alaska Court System forms catalog and the Family Law Self-Help Center. After filing, Alaska law requires a minimum 30-day waiting period before the court can grant the dissolution. The law governing divorce in Alaska is found in Alaska Statutes Title 25, Chapter 24 (AS 25.24). The statutes cover grounds for divorce, property division, spousal support, and parental rights. For genealogy researchers, additional resources on Chugach Census Area records are available at FamilySearch.

Grounds for divorce in Alaska include no-fault incompatibility of temperament as well as fault grounds such as cruelty, desertion, addiction, and felony conviction. The Valdez Superior Court hears all of these for Chugach Census Area residents.

Vital Records and Divorce Certificates

Alaska keeps two separate records of a divorce. The court holds the full case file. The Bureau of Vital Statistics holds a short summary certificate. These are not the same document and you go to different places for each. When the court enters a final decree, a VS-401 statistical form is filed at the same time, and that is what Vital Statistics receives. If you only need proof that a divorce occurred rather than the full decree, a certificate from Vital Statistics may be enough.

The Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics website explains how to order a divorce certificate and what ID is required. Under state law, divorce certificates become public record after 50 years. Newer records have restricted access. The Bureau of Vital Statistics does not hold the full case file. For the actual decree, all financial orders, and any custody documents, you must contact the Valdez Superior Court. The fee waiver form TF-920 is available from the Alaska Court System forms page if cost is a concern.
